In IPC we have been following a topic called ‘Making the News’, linking this topic with World War II and with journalism in our literacy topic.
The children have researched and then written reports based on ‘eye- witness’ accounts of the Blitz in London during the 57 consecutive horrific nights of bombing by the German Luftwaffe, which began on 7th September 1940. Following this they have written post war articles about the evacuation process that occurred on three separate occasions throughout the war. Additionally they have empathized with the evacuees and written a letter home to their families from their war time billet.
Please read some of their fantastic work.
Year 6 have been studying the RE topic of ‘Jesus, the Bread of Life’. Within this we have learned about the links between the first Passover meal, when Moses freed thousands of Hebrew slaves from Egypt and they feasted on roasted lamb, bitter herbs and unleavened bread, to the Last Supper when Jesus asked his disciples to eat the bread and drink the wine that he shared with them and to continue to do so in memory of him.
From this we learnt in detail about each part of the mass and in particular the Eucharist, which again is the link to ‘Jesus the Bread of Life’. Together we wrote a class mass entitled Jesus the ‘Lamb of God’ and then visited The Sacred Heart Church to have a closer look at the sacred vessels and vestments used within the mass services.
Monsignor Heskin kindly took time out of his very busy schedule to talk to us about the Jewish customs and allowed us to look at many beautiful and treasured items in the sacristy including the very beautiful monstrance and the Middleton Lodge Chalice and paten.
Year 6 have been learning about biomes around the world- studying the different landscapes, climates, fauna and floras, population and habitats in our IPC topic called ‘What Does Our World Look Like?’
We visited Ilkley Moor with the kind assistance of the Friends of Ilkley Moor who talked to us all about the rocks, soil and climate of the moor. Did you know that on the moor there are two types of micro biome and a plastic bag will take over 1000 years to biodegrade?
In DT we had fun sewing as we designed a slipper that would be appropriate to wear in the region of a chosen biome. We then worked out a cost for our slippers thinking about materials, labour, packaging, exportation and advertisement of the products before coming to a profitable overall cost- what a lot of maths that took!
Please look at some of our adverts which include photographs of our actual slippers.
