We went to Drax Power Station Near Selby.

Drax is one on the cleanest, most efficient power stations in Europe and the biggest in the UK. We learnt how electricity is produced from coal and then sent by the National Grid all over the country to be used. We had a look at giant turbines that have the electromagnets inside them which make our electricity. At Drax they care about the environment and use biomass to burn instead of coal all the time, biomass is Elephant grass which is a renewable source of fuel to burn. They have also created a nature reserve around the power station to encourage wildlife to flourish in the area, some of us were lucky enough to see foxes, deer and herons on the reserve.

Class at Drax

The Children in Year 3 Have Been Building Shelters.

As the entry point to our IPC unit, they were asked to collect materials at home that could be used for building a shelter. We were amazed by the amount of resources the children found, every kind of box imaginable arrived in the classroom!

Each group selected all the materials they wanted to use and took their place in our hall where the building began (unfortunately it was raining outside). We were very impressed at how they all worked together as a team. They learned so many skills such as how to join strips of cane together (lashing) and weighting materials down with something heavy to help keep their structures stable.

The finished shelters looked amazing; some even managed to look quite cosy!
